Check out my recent post, this thread actually promoted it and I put forth what I think a tiny house is.

Has anyone officially put forth a clear definition of what is and what is not a tiny house? I have not yet seen such a definition but there could be one.

I am inclined to think that an RV is one type of tiny house. In fact some RV's are actually pretty big compared to what I think of when I think of a tiny house. Size and features of an RV can be taken to lavish extremes just like more typical housing can.

I do not know what the numbers are but there certainly are people that are "full-timers" in the RV community. There also happens to be a growing number of people that are living in RV's out of necessity. The type of RV you describe here fits a certain lifestyle that anticipates the need for almost instant mobility. Not all tiny houses are intended to be mobile.

Perhaps some people might disagree but I think the basic answer is that this is a type of tiny (or small?) house with a very specific focus that would meet the needs of some group of people. It clearly needs to be built differently than a tiny house that is intended for stationary use. Materials used are clearly heavily influenced by this as well as by market place perceptions as to what an RV should look like. I can easily imagine that there are people out there that think that a tumbleweed type of tiny house on wheels looks more like a Beverly Hill Billy's vehicle than it does and RV.

So what about a small boat with a live aboard cabin?

Has anybody considered living full time in a smallish RV as a form of tiny house living? I'm thinking along the lines of a "Class B" RV, which is the kind that looks like a converted cargo van. Advantages: inexpensive (you can find good used vans for under $20k), they get decent mileage for rvs (around 15+mpg, meaning if you don't need to drive a lot, your house could double as your car), truly portable, can be operated off or on grid according to one's wishes, and because many of these vans don't have that "I'm an RV!" look to them, parking pretty much anywhere overnight is not much of a hassle.

Seriously, what am I missing here? Space-wise, a typical 19 or 20 foot van looks to have around the same area as, say, a Tumbleweed. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
